6:34 am - The Chronic Rift Plays Match Game
|

I produce a podcast on pop culture called The Chronic Rift. For something different this week, I got two of our listeners to play Match Game against four of the show's regulars. It was a lot of fun, despite the early misgivings of the staff. You can take a listen to the episode here - http://thechronicrift.podomatic.com/.

11:38 am - Theoretical perfect Jeopardy! game
|

I have often wondered how much money a person could end up with if they answered every question correctly on Jeopardy!, found the Daily Doubles last and in the lowest-value squares, made them all true Daily Doubles and won, and then bet everything in Final Jeopardy! and won. Here's what I've come up with:
The first round has six categories worth $3,000 each. If we assume the Daily Double is in one of the $200 squares, a player who answered all the questions correctly would have amassed $17,800 before finding the Daily Double. Betting everything and winning would leave that player with $35,600.
Then we move on to Double Jeopardy!, which has six categories worth $6,000 each, with two Daily Doubles in two $400 squares. Running this board would net the player an additional $35,200, added to her/his $35,600 from the Jeopardy! round, for a total of $70,800. Betting it all on the first Daily Double and winning would leave him/her with $141,600. Betting that enormous sum on the second Daily Double and getting it right would give her/him $283,200 going into Final Jeopardy!
Here, our intrepid player again bets it all and gets it right, finishing the day with an unimaginable $566,400 in a single game! This makes Ken Jennings's $40K or so per game seem pretty lame (though of course it's not).
Have I missed anything?

6:11 pm - Jeopardy! called
|

I've been invited to an audition in Culver City for people who passed the Jeopardy! online test. Until today, I had no idea I'd even passed the test, which IIRC was given almost a year ago. I'm flying to LA on March 11 for an audition on March 12. They originally invited me February 11, but I'll be in Hawaii that day, so I asked to reschedule, and fortunately they said yes.
If anyone has been to a Jeopardy! audition at the Sony Studios in Culver City, what is the process like? What should a 40-something white male nerd wear? How should I try to differentiate myself from the scads of other 40-something white male nerds who will no doubt be auditioning that same day? I've been on one game show (the now-defunct Merv Griffin's Crosswords) a couple of years ago, but they were desperate for contestants (small money, lots of shows per season, no name recognition), so it wasn't hard to get on once I passed the written test. Jeopardy!, I'm led to believe, is much more selective.

6:42 pm - Australian Rules "Play Your Card Right"
|

Found a clip from an episode of the Australian version of Play Your Cards Right (a.k.a. Card Sharks in these United States).
While the Australian producers took the British PYCR title and idea of couple versus couple instead of solo player versus solo player here in the U.S., the set is styled after the original Card Sharks series' set.
PYCR aired on Seven Network and the following clip came from a 1984 episode. Your host is Ugly Dave Gray, who was a regular panelist on the Australian version of Match Game '7x, which also used the British title of Blankety Blanks.

8:13 am - Alex Trebek Interviewed On CBC Radio Show
|

dmota104
|
In this interview that aired on the CBC radio show Q, Alex remembers his first big break (Wizard of Odds), his first stint at hosting a hard quiz (Double Dare) and the tremendous number of cards and letters he received after his heart attack. He also sets the record straight on certain trivia "facts" posted on the internet.
It's a 17-minute clip that's worth your time.

I don't want to sound insensitive in case there is a legitimate reason for it, but does anyone know why Fred Rogan (sp?) doesn't/can't look at the camera? When GSN Live first started, I chalked it up to nerves and new programming, but they've been doing this for a while, and he always seems to be looking slightly below or to the side of the camera. It's irritating.

12:33 pm - Mole 3 Host for the US

Is none of than Jon Kelly... yeah that's what I thought too. However, I honestly didn't know Anderson Cooper until the original Mole. Apparently Jon Kelly is a former correspondent for the Extra TV show. The show is scheduled to debut on May 26th. I can't wait! I actually did a Chicago audition, but didn't receive a call back. It was still fun to meet the casting people.

i love watching Double Dare late nights on GSN. they're in the middle of showing the really long sequence of games that Ray Winston wins. one of the things Alex said just cracked me up.
let's just say you know you're watching an old game show when Alex Trebek seriously refers to an amazingly good contestant as "the OJ Simpson of Double Dare".
and nobody laughs.

6:42 pm - The New Chain Reaction: En français, monsieur
|

dmota104
|
All of us in the fandom know the first revival of Chain Reaction, titled The New Chain Reaction, was taped in Montreal in front of a canned studio audience for CTV (I think; feel free to correct if I erred in that statement) and USA Network.
With the likely exception of jaydlewis, vtown and everyone else north of the U.S./Canada border, how many of you knew that first revival spawned a French-Canadian spinoff entitled Action Réaction? I didn't -- 'til just recently.
Check out http://tva.canoe.com/emissions/onnapastoutelasoiree/meilleursmoments.html and scroll down a bit to find the video clip (of course, you could use that search text tool on your browser and type in "Action") of a former contestant sharing the story of meeting Action Réaction host Pierre Lalonde (also of The Mad Dash fame; love those clips on YouTube).
There isn't much footage from the episode in the minute-long clip. The footage obviously comes from a Christmas episode (hence the wreath behind Pierre and the song "Jingle Bells" instead of the original CR series disco-ish theme). The set looks like the one used in The New Chain Reaction's second season.
Curious thing -- the clip notes the footage comes from a 1989 episode. IIRC, by '89, The New Chain Reaction had started its solo player vs. solo player format.
Finally, Wikipedia, which I sometimes take with a grain of salt, note Action Réaction paired a civilian with a French-Canadian celebrity.

12:09 pm - The wheel rolled back to Italy?

bri2kprods

According to a new entry in the German-language Gameshow-Kult web site, there is a revival of the Italian "Wheel of Fortune" entitled La ruota della Fortuna. It's kind of hard to tell from the second picture if they're using a trilon puzzle board or a digital display panel one. Point out a couple similarities by clicking here.
